Avis President’s Club Upgrades – Sometimes you get Surprised

Yesterday I was on a business trip to Chattanooga, TN.  I am an Avis President’s Club member.  But not an Avis First member.  I am not sure exactly how that works.  You would think as a President’s Club I would automatically get Avis First.  I guess it is in the way I received the President’s Club membership.  I e-mailed for it and got it for free.  That is right, I didn’t have to earn it the traditional way.

You see, I work for a big company that has lots of business travelers.  So all the major business travel vendors have a relationship with us with negotiated rates and special programs.  I e-mailed my corporate travel desk, and asked them to request Avis First/President’s club for me.  They did, and were willing to make me President’s club.  Great!

So yesterday I go to Chattanooga, and pick-up my rental, and am very surprised at my upgrade.  I didn’t even have to ask for it.  A Volvo s60.  How about that?

I ended up driving about 200 miles in it, and really enjoyed its handling, suspension, and pick-up.  The only downside is (I think) it is front wheel drive and I prefer rear wheel drive.  I could feel some understeer when I took a quick turn.  What Avis or rental car upgrades have you been surprised with?  I would say my worst “downgrade” was a lime green Volkswagen beetle in 2007 in Ft. Lauderdale that I had to share with another business traveller.

Volvo s60 – makes for a nice rental car upgrade!
